The Devastating Transformation Just One Year Has Made in the United States

Twelve months back, the environment was completely distinct. Ahead of the American presidential vote, reflective residents could acknowledge America's significant faults – its inequities and imbalance – however they continued to identify it as the United States. A democratic nation. A country where the rule of law carried weight. A state guided by a dignified and decent official, notwithstanding his elderly years and increasing frailty.

These days, as October 2025 ends, numerous citizens barely recognize the nation we inhabit. Persons believed to be illegal immigrants are rounded up and shoved into vehicles, sometimes blocked from fair treatment. The East Wing of the presidential residence – is being destroyed for a grotesque ballroom. The leader is persecuting his opponents or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department surrender an enormous amount of taxpayer money. Uniformed troops are dispatched across metropolitan centers on false pretexts. The defense headquarters, rebranded the Department of War, has practically freed itself of regular press examination while it uses potentially totaling close to a trillion USD from citizen taxes. Universities, law firms, journalism organizations are submitting due to presidential intimidation, and wealthy elites are regarded as nobility.

“America, only a few months ahead of its 250-year mark as the planet's foremost free society, has fallen over the limit toward dictatorship and extremism,” an American historian, wrote in August. “Finally, swifter than I thought feasible, it occurred in this country.”

Each day begins to new horrors. And it's hard to comprehend – and painful to realize – how severely declined we are, and the rapid pace with which it unfolded.

However, we know that the president was legitimately chosen. Following his highly troubling previous administration and even after the cautions linked to the knowledge of the conservative plan – even after the leader directly stated openly he planned to act as an autocrat just on day one – sufficient voters selected him over the other candidate.

While alarming as today's circumstances is, it's more frightening to understand that we’re only several months into this presidential term. What will three more years of this downfall position us? And suppose that period turns into a more extended duration, since there is nobody to restrain this president from opting that a third term is essential, maybe for defense purposes?

Certainly, all is not lost. We will have congressional elections next year that may create a new political equilibrium, if Democrats retake the Senate or House of Congress. There are government representatives who are attempting to exert certain responsibility, such as lawmakers currently launching an investigation concerning the try to money grab from the justice department.

And a national vote three years from now could start the path toward restoration just as the previous vote put us on this unfortunate course.

We see millions of Americans demonstrating in public spaces throughout communities, like they performed in the past days in the No Kings rallies.

Robert Reich, stated lately that “the slumbering force of America is awakening”, similar to past post-McCarthyism during the fifties or amid the sixties activism or in the seventies crisis.

During those times, the unstable nation eventually was righted.

Reich says he recognizes the signs of that revival and sees it happening currently. For proof, he points to the large-scale demonstrations, the extensive, multi-faction opposition to a television host's removal and the near-unanimous rejection by reporters to accept government requirements they report only approved content.

“The sleeping giant perpetually exists inactive till specific greed becomes so noxious, a particular deed so contemptuous toward public welfare, specific cruelty so disruptive, that he has no choice but to awaken.”

It’s an optimistic take, and I appreciate Reich’s experienced view. Maybe he’ll turn out correct.

Meanwhile, the major inquiries remain: is the US able to ever recover? Is it possible to restore its status internationally and its devotion to the rule of law?

Or must we acknowledge that the historical project worked for a while, and then – suddenly, utterly – failed?

My negative thoughts indicates that the latter is true; that everything might be lost. My optimistic spirit, however, tells me that we must try, by any means we can.

For me, as a media critic, that’s about urging journalists to commit, more completely, to their purpose of overseeing leadership. For others, it could mean working on congressional campaigns, or planning demonstrations, or developing approaches to protect voting rights.

Under twelve months back, we lived in a very different place. Twelve months later? Or three years from now? The truth is, we are uncertain. The only option is to attempt to not give up.
