Three police officers perished and at least 15 people sustained injuries in what appears to be intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence close to the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Italian military police.
A man and a woman were arrested at the location and another man who escaped subsequent to the incident was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.
The blast could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the location revealed the structure turned into a heap of debris.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.
The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to debts accrued by the property owners.
Mediators had been dispatched to engage the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the officers came soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents caused the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander told the media.
“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the detonation immediately struck our members,” he explained.
Petrol bombs were also located at the site, the interior minister said.
The wounded by the incident comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
According to the Verona prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.
He was convinced the detonation had taken place on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Just prior to the incident, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being opened”.
“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents stated to reporters, adding that the three had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than leave the house.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three officers who had died in the service of their country.
