The American area renowned for its historical past, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a swift change. New research finds that New England is warming more quickly than almost anywhere else on the globe.
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the contiguous United States, according to the research. The pace of its warming has apparently accelerated significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only increasing, it's speeding up," stated a primary researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The analysis places the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the American South," the researcher noted.
For the study, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snowpack dating back to 1900. The review encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They found that New England has warmed by an average of 4.5 degrees Fahrenheit from 1900 to 2024. This is substantially higher than the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is worrying," said the researcher.
A major cause for this exceptional build-up of heat may be shifts in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat trapped by greenhouse gases.
In the region near New England, an influx of meltwater from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Atlantic current. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then pushed further inland by prevailing winds.
"The excess heat from climate change is being held in the sea like a massive battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a recipient of that energy."
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme climate events in recent years, including enormous flooding and extended dry spells.
The rising heat endangers iconic elements of regional life:
"I reside just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That tradition has pretty much vanished from large parts of the southern part of the region."
